I believe these are being used as a way to promote tourism in a specific rural region. That’s the case in the Caledonia area of southeastern Minnesota, for example. I believe Iowa is really big into these quilt squares and they are becoming more common in Minnesota.
Where did you photograph this one? The contrast of red against gray is stunning. I like barn quilts, as long as they are not painted ONTO the actual barn.
